A Short History of PMI, the PMBOK® Guide, and the PMP Exam.

PMI’s first credential was the PMP®, and the first certifications were awarded in 1984.

  • 1969 – Birth of PMI
  • 1984 – First PMP® Exams are administered
  • 1987 – “PMBOK® Guide” is released – not hardcopy – sections A through H, 5-6 pages in each section.
  • 1990s – Drafts of the “PMBOK® Guide” are released – August 1994 Exposure Draft is released. – 64 pages
  • 1996 – Version One is released
  • 2000 – Version 2 is released
  • August 2005 – Test changes to Version 3 – PMBOK® Guide is 390 pages; 592 ITTO
  • 2007 - PMBOK® Guide earns the ANSI/ISO/IEC
  • August 2009 – Test changes to Version 4 – PMBOK® Guide is 467 pages; 517 ITTO;
  • August 31, 2011 – 30% of the questions are changed to conform to the latest RDS (Role Delineation Study)
  • August 2013 – Test changes to Version 5; PMBOK® Guide is now 589 pages; 619 ITTO!

There are a number of practice standards that also support the PMBOK® Guide. These include practice standards for the WBS, Risk, Configuration Management, Scheduling, Agile, and Earned Value. The PMBOK® Guide and these practice standards can be downloaded for free from PMI.org for PMI members
